Remembering to go your strengths can be a very effective weapon. Because it gives you a baseline (no pun) to get you back on track in time of duress. Rice sometimes didn't remember that tonight. One of there strengths is free throws. Get to the line and score with the clock not running. Where they did a better job in the second half. (10-12). Only 4 opportunities in the first. And that's not taking advantage of your opportunities. Half time 26-17 SMU.
With Austin (Ramljak) and Barhom (Firozgary) in foul trouble. And Gearhart out for a couple of weeks. Rice had no effective size to combat against SMU's Cunningham (Cannen, 6'10) and Williams (Shawn, 6'7). (13, 6 rebs). 30 points in the paint gives a telling story, especially when Rice had a 4 guard line up parts of the second half.To attempt to close the gap.
SMU went up by as much as 24 during the second half. With 10pts from Ryan Manuel during a 6min stretch.Which also included Rice having two 3+min drought's during that same stretch. Every team will at some point have offensive drought's. As a coach you hope the drought is an anomaly that wont last long. As a player, you're shooting everything, trying to get it back in gulps.
The gulps, nor the paitience worked for Rice tonight.
Tomorrow C-USA WBB,... RICE-UH, Noon, Tudor Fieldhouse.
